5 PWD teams to survey 102 flyovers
Last week, the new BJP govt held high-level meetings and directed officials to undertake road and flyover repair work and fix the problems before the monsoon. Broken and pothole-riddled roads are one of the key problems that Delhiites face in several parts of the city. PWD has already worked out a priority list of 108km of road length for repair.
The department usually replaces the expansion joints of the flyovers to strengthen any elevated stretch. As per the plan, during the strengthening and maintenance work, the concrete of the flyovers will be repaired along with expansion joints, bearings, etc.
The Public Works Department (PWD) of Delhi has assembled five teams, totaling 15 officials, to inspect 102 flyovers under its jurisdiction. These inspections are scheduled over the next two days, with comprehensive reports, including photographs and identified issues, due by March 6, 12 noon.
The assessment will focus on various aspects such as cleanliness, tiling, painting, and encroachments. Based on the findings, the PWD plans to allocate funds and strategize necessary repairs. Priority flyovers identified for urgent repairs include:
Andrews Ganj Flyover
Gokulpuri Flyover
Zakhira Flyover
Tilak Nagar Flyover
Old Punjabi Bagh Flyover
Raja Garden Flyover
Shadipur Flyover (noted as the city's oldest)
Currently, repair work is already underway on the Sarita Vihar Flyover. Many of these structures, exceeding a decade in age, have not undergone significant maintenance since their construction. Standard repair procedures typically involve replacing expansion joints, bearings, and refurbishing the upper concrete layers.
This initiative follows directives from recent high-level meetings aimed at addressing infrastructure issues before the monsoon season. The PWD has prioritized 108 kilometers of roadways for repairs to alleviate common problems such as potholes and deteriorated road surfaces. To minimize commuter inconvenience, the department aims to complete maintenance within stipulated timelines, coordinating with traffic police for necessary route diversions.
